Anza Expedition

-In 1775–1776, Spanish military commander and explorer Juan Bautista de Anza II led an expedition of nearly 300 colonists from what is now Sonora, Mexico to the San Francisco peninsula to establish a presidio and mission
-The expedition's goal was to establish an overland route for further settlement of the region
-The expedition's route is now marked by the Juan Bautista de Anza National Historic Trail
